Chapter 11
Fakhar
The fact that Sahab ji had summoned him the moment he got back indicated just how angry he was. Fakhar wondered who had blabbed to him. It must have been that silly boy heâd had fun with. The woman couldnât have done so, since sheâd been dispatched to her new captors days ago. Both the woman and the boy had been so forgettable that Fakhar didnât even remember their names.
Plastering a smile on his face, he knocked on the battered wooden door and entered. The door creaked as it opened to reveal a small room with just a neatly made bedstead upon which Sahab ji sat. Fakhar immediately lowered his gaze. âSalam, Sahab ji. So good to see you back all hale and hearty.â
There was pin-drop silence in the room except for the sound of the tennis ball being bounced on the concrete floor.
âWe donât shit where we eat, Fakhar,â Sahab ji murmured, his voice quiet, but deadly. âYou had no business subjecting those people to such torture.â
Fakhar would have liked to disagree, seeing how Sahab ji abducted these people from their homes and then sold them off, but he kept his mouth shut. He had to be careful about this. If Sahab ji turned him away, there would be nowhere for him to go, and he knew that people with tastes like his almost always ended up either in jail or dead in a ditch. He didnât want either fate for himself, so he kept quiet, keeping his head bowed, not meeting Sahab jiâs eye.
âYou know, I do think there is something dreadfully wrong with you in the head,â Sahab ji continued. âHave you no remorse for what you did to that poor boy? He needed stitches. Youâre lucky that youâre under my protection because our authorities take a very dim view of men who torture women and children like this.â
âThe little shit was asking for it, Sahab ji,â Fakhar said. âI only gave him what he wanted. And heâs no kid, let me tell you that.â
âYou mean he was asking to be raped?â
âYou donât know these people like I do, Sahab ji. A firm hand is what they need.â
He stole a glance at Sahab ji to see that his eyes were blazing as he sat on the charpai with his legs spread out, tennis ball in hand. He was gripping it so hard that his knuckles had turned white.
âYou presume that the man who employs your sorry ass knows so little about the world, do you? These people were under my protection, and you violated them. I spend a lot of money keeping this operation running. I am planning to expand it, to become something more than a common kidnapper. And you â you flout all the rules?â
Fakhar bit his tongue. Although Sahab ji provoked both fear and admiration in him, sometimes, he could be very dense. In Fakharâs village, people got raped every day. What was so special about it? Consent didnât matter. That was what heâd been taught his entire life, that it was a manâs world out there.
